Gum Takes Tooth are London-based duo of Thomas Fuglesang and Jussi Brightmore. Here’s the deal: Thomas’ drums are physically wired to a table of homemade gadgets, which are controlled by Jussi, who uses the gadgets to modulate and distort the signal coming from the drums. The result of this electronic wizardry is a thunderous rampage of no wave noise, grunge and acid, a single headed beast with two bodies triggering home grown electronic instruments, bare circuit boards, electrified African thumb piano and assorted crude noise making devices tweaked, moulded and mangled in real-time.

British Wildlife Festival: Galaxians

Matt Woodward and Jed Skinner met in June 2011. Armed with a shared love for the output of classic disco and house labels such as Salsoul, Prelude, Sleeping Bag, artists such as Patrice Rushen and Herbie Hancock, and DJs / producers such as Walter Gibbons, Larry Levan, Giorgio Moroder and Francois Kevorkian the pair began writing music as Galaxians in July 2011.

Galaxians combine elements of classic New York boogie, early 1980s electro and synth-funk in songs such as 'Fire And Magic' and 'Electroads', to create a contemporary version of something which lovers of all things dance music would describe as old-school or familiar. Galaxians' sound combines 606, 808 and 909 drum machine percussion, hand claps and snare drum sounds, programmed synth basslines, analog synth melodies played in real time and live acoustic drums. The result is unashamed party music, from the behind-the-beat proto-Miami funk of 'Mermaids Of Miami' to 'Fire And Magic (extended version)' which seeks to emulate classic post-disco tracks such as Patrice Rushen's 'Get Off (You Fascinate Me)'.

Jed Skinner's synth melodies wrap themselves around the subconscious whilst his solos on the aforementioned songs bristle with playful intent and seek to place both time and space on an equal footing. Matt Woodward's drumming seeks to emulate the work of pioneering players such as Salsoul Records' Earl Young, from the in-the-pocket swing of 'Fire And Magic' to the behind-the-beat groove and polyrhythmic hi-hat accents of 'Mermaids Of Miami'.

Galaxians will debut their live set in early 2012 and will enter the studio in February 2012 to record for the first time proper. Matt Woodward also plays drums in Azores and has previously played drums in bands such as Cissy, The Dragon Rapide, The Lapse, Origami and Kito. Jed Skinner also plays in the Colombian percussion band Tambores Lejanos and runs the website www.jedskinner.com, a site which details his own arts and music-based projects.

April sees the return to the UK of VOLCANO THE BEAR, in celebration of their new album for Rune Grammofon, Golden Rhythm/Ink Music, which is released in late February. The band has in recent years scaled down to a duo of Daniel Padden and Aaron Moore yet are more dynamic and angular than ever on stage. And their output testifies to this too - 15 years into their discography and yet this year saw the release of arguably some of the best records they've ever made, not least Hotbites Live At The Nightlight. The Rune release is set to top even that, their trademark collision of This Heat, Robert Wyatt and Albert Ayler taken to new multi-instrumentalist heights, perhaps fired by their ongoing interactions with other profound outfits such as The One Ensemble (Padden), Airway, Boredoms and A Hawk And A Hacksaw (Moore).

Volcano The Bear have, in the words of The Wire, "produced some of the finest, wildest British music of the last 10 years on record and on stage…”. Or, as Losing Today puts it, “No one sounds, has sounded or will ever sound quite like Volcano The Bear.”

A calculatedly hysterical melting pot of This Heat, Robert Wyatt, Faust and Albert Ayler, seen through a prism of occasionally theatrical improvisations and unhinged set pieces, VTB so excited Nurse With Wound's Steven Stapleton that he brought his United Dairies label out of cold storage to release their first album proper, 'The Inhazer Decline', in 2000.

Since then, they've graced such labels as Beta Lactam Ring, Textile, Digitalis, Pickled Egg, Alt Vinyl and NO-FI with their peerless product.

On record, Volcano The Bear offer stark and stunning absurdities, in the most bizarrely beautiful way. Live, the adrenalin and invention drips from their earlobes as they thrust spectacular oddities in the faces of their audiences, always aided by their sublime multi-instrumentalism.

Once seen, never forgotten, or as this review from Avanto festival puts it: "Volcano TheBear...combines improvisation and playful experimentation with a conception of music that borders on the anthropological. Their extensive knowledge of the traditions of both experimental and folk music, combined with their other influences, makes the band a difficult one to categorise. Although VTB has been mentioned in connection with bands such as Vibracthedral Orchestra, Jackie-O Motherfucker and No-Neck Blues Band, VTB differs from the aforementioned as it consciously avoids the trance-inducing pulse in its music. Rather than trying to reach a trance through repetition they set up a ritual space where a large number of instruments associate freely. Absurd humour and eclectic ways of producing sounds are characteristic of VTB's live performances, which are largely built on improvisation. Familiar themes can be introduced as milestones on a journey towards a result, which remains unknown. The band records everything they play, and uses these recordings as raw material for their albums. For Volcano The Bear, post-processing is part of composing; their records are reminiscent of how This Heat and Faust used collage methods in rock music...The surprise element of their performances is further emphasised by the fact that their records - combinations of disciplined studio work and recorded improvisation - often sound nothing like the music played by the band on stage."

It is known that during the mid to late nineteenth century, amateur music making, in all its forms thrived in the industrial areas of the North of England. In areas of the West Riding of Yorkshire, various choirs, orchestras and bands of varying instrumentation were founded. The Ashtray Navigations, formed around 1881, was one such unit.

Until the 1920′s, Ash Nav, as it is often affectionately known, could be described as ‘just another typical local band’.
It no doubt suffered occasional successes but probably had its fair share of disappointments. In addition to playing many concerts throughout the area, bands thrived on the spirit of competition regularly meeting each other at the host of local and regional brass band competitions of the time.

We don’t know what the particular catalyst was but during the 1920′s a much more determined effort was made by the then members to improve their status among the nation’s brass bands. Better players were attracted, probably from a slightly wider area.
The hard work paid off in 1929. Ash Nav broke into the highest level of brass banding when they won both the July and September Brass Band Contests at Belle Vue, Manchester, a feat achieved only once before, and not equalled since.

They consolidated their position in the top echelons when then won the September again three years running in 1932-33-34 conducted by their professional conductor, the great William Halliwell. Barred from competing in 1935 they regained the title once again in 1936. They have remained in the top league of brass bands ever since, continuing to feature in the premier championship prize lists, but it wasn’t until 1978 that they managed to win again.

Shield Your Eyes are easily one of my favourite bands to watch live for their astonishing guitar playing, catchy yet complicated riffs and boogie math stylings, a truly unique band in any sense of the word. They are launching their latest album 'Volume Four' right here in Leeds for your eyes and ears!

“Volume Four is the most recent album by Shield Your Eyes; the UK's most commonly misunderstood and ill represented underground band; lumped into an imagined post-hardcore and math-rock 'scene' that bears little relation to their sonic horizon; Shield Your Eyes' roots are in a much more organic and native soil. This is no better demonstrated than with their latest offering that successfully shakes off any remnants of USA noise-rock mimesis instead allowing their classic rock and progressive blues influences shine through.

In the vein of the great power trios of the 60's and 70's such as Taste and early-Thin Lizzy, through Mahavishnu Orchestra and Black Sabbath, and taking only the prime cuts of contemporary underground noise-nicks such as Hella, touring partners Pneu and the Warp records output, Shield 'Em strip rock music back to its basics; inventive song writing, astonishing musicianship and plenty of passion in amongst the boogie.

On this record the songs have been left as open structures to allow room for the extended outros and spontaneous jamming that has made SYE such a legendary live experience. Likewise the recording has taken place in an off-season hotel on Jersey with their sometimes bassist Dan Pedersen at the helm as engineer and producer. The roomy and vintage sound as well as the unconventionally relaxed surroundings in which the recording was made manifest themselves as a record of remarkable sincerity and authenticity.

The album kicks of with Larkspur, a deceptively laid back number that aptly sets the assured and confident tone. Elsewhere tracks like 'Tryna Lean a Ladder Up Against the Wind' demonstrate a grasp of nuanced dynamics that moves beyond the overused clean/quiet verse and loud/noisy breakdowns of much contemporary rock, harking back to a more sensitive and sophisticated era. On 'You Merit High Hopes' the squealing guitar and mind battering drums that characterised previous Eyes-output is swapped for a groove with which to truly appreciate the songwriting. Brno, the penultimate number, is a thumbs-in-belt-loop boogie that gives space for the rhythm section to blast off with drum and bass runs to turn John McLaughlin's band green

Without doubt this is Shield Your Eyes' finest album to date and with no signs of slowing down their industrious pace of writing and touring it hopefully marks the beginning of a glorious mid-career period. Volume 4 should finally set Shield Your Eyes apart from the skinny-jeaned crowd and shows they are playing a long game that will outlive the momentary trends and fads of the internet age."

Looking for something you can dance to? Keep walking sugarbritches, ‘caus yer not going to find it here. Not now. Described as Leeds’ “strongest and most handsome men,” Blacklisters deal in righteous, teeth-grinding, white-knuckle noise rock. All riffage akimbo and neck-snapping time changes, this is a hardcore din that you’re advised to keep concealed from your friends and neighbors lest you be labeled “socially undesirable.”

'Add to that, a burst of murder from Blacklisters and Bad For Lazarus would have had to have pulled something seriously stinking out of the hat to bring down the mood of these Monday night free-gig shenanigans. Blacklisters, for the record, seem to be growing more and more monstrous by the gig. Only catching them every few months is kind of like realising your little baby nephew grew horns and developed three times your IQ score since the last time you saw him.' - Hayley Avron

As a prelude to their new album due out in 2012, Blacklisters have a new single out titled I Can Confirm. After a quick shot of drum, the guitars verb into a dirty tempo, before Billy launches into his vocals. There is something a little more subtle about Billy’s vocals in comparison to Swords, which was their giveaway single when they signed to Brew Records. If you imagine your clench fist is a microphone and you aggressively taunt your vocals inbetween the fingers, you are getting close to how Billy’s vocals come across. It’s that constrained ire of someone who is in control, but still raging about it all. The other band members are more than happy to join Billy in ranting their instruments, although there are moments of lightness when either guitar or Alistair’s drums provide ample support. However, its when Blacklisters let go and rock that the real enjoyment shines through, none more so when I Can Confirm begins its final climb to the moment when Billy is left in a haze of distortion almost crying “I can’t help it” as though we should have suddenly found some sympathy for him. I Can Confirm offers the kind of controlled brutality of hardcore rock which when balanced the Blacklisters way is an exciting anticipation for the future.

Although traditionally a quiet time year in terms of musical output, I Can Confirm is a wonderful antidote to lashings of Christmassy Slade, Wizard and the no doubt obligatory X-Factor Christmas Number One (sadly Rage Against The Machine is seemingly that one swallow which doesn’t make a Summer). After hearing I Can Confirm, you'll be wishing the year away and looking forward to 2012 and Blacklisters full-length debut album.

Super Luxury are a real band. Described as 'Alan Partridge & Phil Collins crashing a dodgy blues jam night and amping it the fuck up', this 'whatever' piece are a bunch of adequate musicians playing balls out stadium party noise rock. So basically they sound like AC/DC or The Cult mixed in with Big Black, US Maple or Suicide or something. It's extremely difficult to write about your own band in third person without looking like a big headed fool, but it's also easy to get on the bill for your own gigs... Swings and Roundabouts.

Action Beat are the noise band from Bletchley. An instrumental improvisational noise rock band from Bletchley, UK, consisting of a rotating line up of three or more drummers and four guitar players and a bass player. The band was founded in 2004 by core members Don McLean (who also owns the label Fortissimo Records) and James Carney. Other members are Harry Taylor (guitar), Jake Burton (drums), James Walsh (drums), Luke Webb (baritone) and Steven Dart (bass).

In 2007 their debut album 1977-2007: Thirty Years of Hurt, Then Us Cunts Exploded was released on their own Fortissimo label. This release led to a signing with Truth Cult/Southern Records for the follow up albums. The band makes music in the tradtion of the noise symphonies of Glenn Branca and related acts such as the early Sonic Youth and Boredoms. For their sound they tune their guitars often in alternate tunings.

Since first launching onto the scene in 2008 the band has played shows across the length and bredth of the country, including numerous self organised tours. The 1st release ‘Get Your Learn On’ went out through new indie Godmonkey Recordings in May 2008 and has sold a respectable amount at
gigs, online, and in stores as well as receiving rave reviews.

In 2009 Big Scary Monsters added Shapes to their ever-impressive roster and
the band look forward to another busy year. Shapes released their first record
for BSM, entitled ‘The Pasture, The Oil’ in May 2009. The Pasture, The Oil was
recorded in January 2009 with Nick Finnish (Jonny Truant, Blakfish, Youves)
and mastered by Alan Douches (Converge, Mastodon, Dillinger Escape Plan, The
Rapture, Fallout Boy)

Japanese label Zankyo Records picked up on the band and released the two EPs
together for the Japanese market, with which the band headed over to Japan to
tour the release.

2010 saw Shapes start the year touring alongside GlassJAw and Pulled Apart By
Horses, before taking a slower pace from touring whilst writing the debut album.

To keep things ticking over The Pasture, The Oil Remixes was put together,
featuring all 6 tracks on their 2009 EP, but remixed by various different artists.

Shapes booked in to Tonteknik Studios in Umea, Sweden for December/
November 2010 to record the debut full-length album. This was with legendary
producer Eskil Lovstrom, famed for his work with Refused, Poison The Well, In
Flames, Hell Is For Heroes, Meshuggah and more. Produced by Eskil Lovstrom,
mixed by Eskil Llovstrom and Pelle Henricson and mastered by Pelle Henricson,
the album sees a new side to the band and is backed with an incredible sound.

Raw, no-nonsense energy. Lean and taut synth-pop, and a disco beat with teeth. Snarling vocals are backed by a super-tight band. This outfit are for fans of The Fall, early Factory Records, New York post-punk/disco-not-disco innovators like ESG, The Contortions and Liquid Liquid, all fuelled by lethal amounts of Suicide-style energy.

Main member Gareth Smith, is backed by about ten different line-ups -- the shifting sound held together by the underlying style of Gareth's punchy writing and snarling vocal delivery. Following on from a couple of highly-acclaimed singles on the Kum Ba Yah and Marquis Cha Cha labels, as well as a Marc Riley BBC session, Smith locked himself away in his Chorlton flat and battered out the scratchy, 4-track demos. With an emphasis on nailing a "vibe" over tidiness, Gareth's dysfunctional vocal separating it from any obvious Madchester dubiousness. Then comes the lean disco-not-disco vibes of "Engine" brutal and gigantic, recalling the terrifying vibes of The Birthday Party's "The Friend Catcher.

Stranger Son is the sound of Manchester now. Sure, there are comparisons to The Fall, ESG, etc., but this is not some limp pastiche of the Northwest's previous musical glories, polished-up to appeal to the masses. A ridiculously tight rhythm section shores up scrawling guitar and Smith's howling/shouted vocal stylings, and one cannot help but jerk along. This is a raw burst of primal energy, with songs that are as catchy as hell.

Following the split of Leeds post-punk / afrobeat outfit CISSY in June 2011, in the weeks following their live BBC session and subsequent radio play on BBC 6 Music, three ex-Cissy members Matt Dixon, Gav Montgomery and Matthew Woodward formed the band AZORES in Leeds in July 2011. AZORES played their first show in October 2011, sharing the stage with Zun Zun Egui (Bristol) and Runners (Leeds).

Azores occupy a unique space somewhere between afrobeat, psyche rock and post-punk, with influences ranging from the No Wave movement pioneered in New York during the 1980s by bands such as Liquid Liquid, James Chance and The Dance, to 1990s US bands Heroic Doses and Golden, Afrobeat players such as Ebo Taylor, Victor Uwaifo and Fela Kuti and Sublime Frequencies bands such as Group Inerane.

Into The Azores High starts with a four-to-the-floor Afrobeat dance then twists and turns through heavily syncopated time shifting post-punk, eventually climaxing with all-out punk rock riffing. Straight Outta Tokyo works in much the same way, and both songs share similar space to that occupied by bands such as Zun Zun Egui. The psyche-rock of My Way Or Steve Highway suggests a more direct influnce from Golden's Recital (Spindac Volare) from their 2000 album Golden Summer.

Azores' songs possess an innate, playful post-funk rhythmic momentum, as if Gavin Montgomery's bass guitar itself is hooked around Matt Woodward's drum kit to form a single instrument, propelling the sound forward with a joyous syncopated and polyrhythmic fervour. Matt Dixon's guitar playing sounds equal parts D. Boon, Alex Minoff and Billy Dolan, sometimes plucking punk funk or soloing on one note, other times centred around African Bikutsi melody.

Formed by Fyfe Dangerfield, Gannets have a reputation for playing ecstatic high energy music that is completely improvised skewing electronic pop together with the spirit of free jazz. They feature some of Britain’s key players on the contemporary scene. Put in their own words: Gannets posit an alternative jazz history in which 30’s swing developed straight into a combined form of the free jazz and fusion movements, without any of the intervening decades.

Gannets emerged onto the UK’s improvised music scene several years ago, playing their initial gigs in around 2004 at Hugh Metcalfe’s legendary Klinker Club – home to alternative cabaret, DIY cinema and free jazz in North London. At around the same time, keyboardist and guitarist Fyfe Dangerfield also formed the pop band Guillemots who subsequently signed to Polydor (Universal Music). Guillemots shared Gannets' clarinet and sax section Chris Cundy and Alex Ward for the first few years, and although the two bands served entirely different functions for Dangerfield, a mutual coexistence of pop and experimental music became an important aspect to both projects in varying degrees. Cundy had met Dangerfield whilst working on a piano-bar job at a Cheltenham nightclub, and the pair soon recognised a shared passion for unconventional performance which manifested itself in a variety of guises, including their duo The Executive Caveman which served as an experimental hip hop outfit for a number of thankless open mic nights. After a short stint in LA trailing West Hollywood’s little known improvised music scene, the pair returned to the UK for a Jazz Services funded tour of an expanded outfit called Transmissions of Not, which featured bassist Aristazabal Hawkes who would later join Guillemots.

Drummer Steve Noble and clarinettist Alex Ward form a duo that goes back several years. They appeared on Derek Bailey’s TV documentary On the Edge, first shown on Channel Four in 1992. Noble and Ward were also featured artists at a number of Derek Bailey’s Company Week festivals, and both were involved with various improvised groups of his as well as appearing on many recording projects for the Incus label. Just prior to the formation of Gannets, Steve Noble had invited Cundy and Dangerfield to perform at the London Musicians' Collective annual free festival held at Conway Hall, in what was to become the last performance by Transmissions of Not.

Bassist Dominic Lash had been introduced to Alex Ward whilst living in Oxford, where he was active in helping to resurrect the Oxford Improvisers’ Collective. Lash soon made his entrance onto the London scene where he met Dangerfield while he was formulating songs that would ultimately become part of the Guillemots oeuvre. Lash joined Gannets after the band's first few shows, replacing double bassist John Edwards. By this time they had established themselves within a deeply rooted free improvisation tradition, injecting the music with a playful sense of melody and a strong rhythmic setting that can evoke elements of pop, cartoon music and swing. Over recent years, Gannets have become fond of playing some of London’s more unusual venues such as Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes, The Montague Arms or the floating poetry/music club Boat-Ting. Alex Ward sums up the often contradictory nature of their music: “Gannets posit an alternative jazz history in which 30’s swing developed straight into a combined form of the free jazz and fusion movements, without any of the intervening decades”.

The band releases its debut album on the Babel Label in 2012.

Running rings around themselves with exultant abandon, these three spirited men from Brighton are haunted by grand visions, combining cyclical, harmonised guitar riffs, impressionistic vocals and interwoven rhythms to great effect.

At times recalling the metronomic tendencies of Abe Vigoda and the extended, mesmerising pulse of !!! or Boredoms, Cold Pumas echo in a cave very much of their own, with the last year seeing a split record with Male Bonding through Faux Discx and a 12" RMX EP with Hungry For Power.

British Wildlife Festival: Pseudo Nippon

Pseudo Nippon lives in London, apparently in a shed, although he claims it is a temple. it is rumoured that if you contact him he will give you a shamanic reading in his ‘temple of shed’ for a bag of rice and some vegetables. He also ran a porn line which he called the Nipporn Line where he would rant madly and sexually to whoever chose to call. He is also one half of Cosmic Jebubu, a d.i.y apparell company that claim to have invented the worlds first panthood, literally a pair of pants with a hood.

Pseudo Nippon was born in japan in 1984, then moved over to England in his childhood. He started making music in 2006, sounding like a madded capped hardcore J Popstar, early demos were played on Magz Hall’s You Are Hear Show on Resonance FM. Since then he has played with the likes of Dj Scotch Egg, Pivot, Drum Eyes, Lonely Ghosts, Pre and Bearsuit amongst many others.

He is bringing out a record on the brighton based O.I.B label which will be distributed through Southern. This 7inch vinyl is called ‘Edamame Freakout’ containing four tracks. He is planning to bring out a full length album at the latter part of 2009.

Taking on board influences like Ennio Morricone, Eno, Delia Derbyshire, Goblin, Butthole Surfers and Harmonia, they’ve arrived at an incendiary sound that effortlessly marries the aural enlightenment of a far-reaching avant-garde sensibility with the reckless abandon of trashy rock & roll immediacy.

The band released their debut album, Orphaned by the Ocean on the UK based label Rocket Recordings in January 2009, and its widescreen, experimental sweep of noiserock power and mariachi-tinged melancholia garnered critical acclaim and plaudits from band heroes like Julian Cope and Sonic Boom. Touring with Oneida, Gnod and Thought Forms, and shows with The Heads, Wooden Shjips and Factory Floor followed, before the Hypnoticon EP, which cemented their reputation with 24 minutes of searing psych-euphoria. Following this, Teeth Of The Sea locked themselves away for six months to
create their colossal second album ‘Your Mercury’, a fresh and potent odyssey of dark, cinematic exploration which quickly eclipsed its predecessors, summoning an avalanche of fervent excitement and critical hosannas in its wake.

Formed in the final months of 2008, the band (brothers Oliver and Laurie Pitt on guitar and drums respectively, plus Ross Little on vocals) wasted absolutely no time putting together a collection of songs so ferocious, visceral and intense that when they began playing live a mere couple of months later they were quickly and rightfully acknowledged as Glasgow's most brutal new band, bringing a desperately-needed shot in the arm to the city's stagnating underground scene

With just as much urgency, perhaps fearing that a band with such intensity might burn out just as quickly as they formed, Glasgow's Winning Sperm Party label released their debut album, a 12-track lightning-quick assault of spasticated rhythms, dumb-fun riffs and serrated screams. Each copy was hand-made in bizarre, beautiful triangle-shaped packages (it can also be downloaded for free from the W.S.P. site). Born in Glasgow through a frustration that THEIR kinda music wasn't getting heard in the city, DIVORCE decided that instead of adding to the choir of miserablists and moaners they would instead 'make their own scene'.

Brought together through random encounters, solid friendships and drunken obsessive discussions at terrible parties, a course of action so abhorrent to everyone involved it didn't figure from the very beginning. DIVORCE make no claims for indie credibility or outsider obtuseness, for them to please oneself is the whole of the law.

Their sound quickly coalesed and in a flurry of collective inspiration and enthusiasm a set of songs came together that were ready to be heard and felt by the public only a mere three months after forming, with a sense of stagecraft that would appear confrontational to the audience (Sinead's disrespect of the band/audience 'barrier' often resulted in her giving many in the crowd a more intimate recital) but simply figured to the band as the only honest way to perform.

Early on, this attitude regarding their music, performance and general outlook, got the attention of Glasgow's seminal club OPTIMO (ESPACIO), who invited them to perform at their Sunday residency in November 2008. One brief yet thunderous show later a promise was made to have their noise preserved on vinyl; the results of which can be heard on the four-song, red vinyl 10" ep they released on the club's Optimo Music imprint in June 2009.

Since then they've gained a surprising amount of positive reviews and plaudits from magazines as disparate as Rock-A-Rolla, NME, The Stool Pigeon and Vice as well as many blogs and zines all over the UK. The NME have even attempted to turn their self-created fictional 'Nae-Wave' scene into an actual real thing, as is their wont. Only when 'Nae-Wave' couture starts appearing in Topshop will the alarm-bells start ringing!!

After a hugely successful British Wildlife appearance in 2010 with Glasgow brothers-in-noise Ultimate Thrush, we could not resist inviting them back for more damage.

Since their first performances in early 2006, trioVD have proved themselves to be amongst the most exciting and energetic bands associated with the Leeds Improvised Music Association (LIMA).
The group originally began as the duo project of guitarist Chris Sharkey and alto saxophonist Christophe de Bezenac but was soon augmented by the Bradford-born Chris Bussey on drums.

Inspired by the D.I.Y music scene, trioVD have toured the U.K extensively with their heavy mix of Improv, Rock, Electronica and Jazz. Normally consisting of one set, trioVD perfomances blend written and improvised material in a startling, fresh manner. Along the way the band respectfully tip their collective hat to both contemporary jazz (Tim Berne, Hilmar Jenson's Tyft) and contemporary rock (Lightning Bolt, Battles, Health etc).

They have performed with The Hub, Volt, Dananananaykroyd, Sincabeza, Neptune, Frank Vigroux and Marc Ducret.

For a band that just consist of drums and an organ, Leeds’ Two Minute Noodles make a pretty hefty sound, coming across like Satan’s own lift music. They’ve certainly got one of the most unique sounds I’ve heard in ages: like a church organist who only plays covers of the themes to Commadore 64 games. Their hardcore-lounge stylings are surprisingly catchy… very satisfying

Pseudo Nippon
Pseudo Nippon was born in japan in 1984, then moved over to England in his childhood. He started making music in 2006, sounding like a madded capped hardcore J Popstar, early demos were played on Magz Hall’s You Are Hear Show on Resonance FM. Since then he has played with the likes of Dj Scotch Egg, Pivot, Drum Eyes, Lonely Ghosts, Pre and Bearsuit amongst many others.

He is bringing out a record on the brighton based O.I.B label which will be distributed through Southern. This 7inch vinyl is called ‘Edamame Freakout’ containing four tracks. He is planning to bring out a full length album at the latter part of 2009.

Pseudo Nippon lives in London, apparently in a shed, although he claims it is a temple. it is rumoured that if you contact him he will give you a shamanic reading in his ‘temple of shed’ for a bag of rice and some vegetables. He also ran a porn line which he called the Nipporn Line where he would rant madly and sexually to whoever chose to call. He is also one half of Cosmic Jebubu, a d.i.y apparell company that claim to have invented the worlds first panthood, literally a pair of pants with a hood.

Invisible Sports is the solo project of Volcano The Bear co-founder Aaron Moore. Aaron Moore in an Englishman residing in Brooklyn. In a 2006 article on VTB the Wire magazine described them as “producing some of the finest, wildest British music of the last 10 years on record & on stage”.

Invisible Sports was a bedroom game Moore used to play with a former girlfriend where he would do a variety of naked sport poses which his lover would then have to guess which sport he was posing. The music of Invisible Sports bears no relation to this game but is a marriage of vibraphonic tape drones, spinning cymbals, plumbing pipe loops and swan-like vocals, shamanically pressed into a progressive ritual of improvisation.

Moore has appeared on over 30 albums with various groups & toured extensively in North America & Europe; He has collaborated/performed with Boredoms, Paul Dunmall, Michael Snow, Bill Drummond, Mats Gustaffson, Alan Courtis, C Spencer Yeh, Ilitch, AIRWAY, The Nightingales, Steve Mackay and A Hawk And A Hacksaw who he is about to tour the USA with.
As well as VTB Moore’s other musical projects past & present include Wizards Of Oi, Dragon Or Emperor, Amolvacy, Moore-Muller-Music, Courtis/Moore, Songs Of Norway and Textile Orchestra.

A Grand Day Out Cancelled

It is with great regret that we have had to cancel A Grand Day Out. Unfortunately the main reasons for this frankly is a lack of interest. It is indeed a great shame that the event has had to cancelled for this reason but obviously it can not function without the sufficient funds, funds that we have fallen far short on and I have been forced to make the executive decision to call the whole thing off.

Tickets can be refunded from the place of purchase, I must also say a massive thankyou to all who had bought a ticket and had faith in the festival.

Hired Muscle
A noisy, clangy three piece. Guitar bass and drums, no effects. Tons of riffs. Short songs. Started in Bletchley, taken to Leeds, back in Bletchley. Spiked riffs with post punk grooves, weird rhythms and sloppy lo-fi pop melodies. Influenced by Pavement, Faraquet, Minutemen.

Bad Body are an experimental three piece with a sound that sound like Cabaret Voltaire or Whitehouse. The includes members from Bletchley noise rock group Action Beat.

Bearfoot Beware the only Leeds residents on the bill are a obtuse pop trio for fans of Dananananaykroyd and Shellac, they produce an almighty sound that is equal parts clever and caveman. Oh, and they write songs about Studio Ghibli characters. What's not to like?

Debuting for British Wildlife are Cobra-Fist. A new Sheffield based band who have recently supported Gallops & are inspired by Lightning Bolt, At the drive in, Iron Maiden, Rocky4 and the Spectrum 48K

British Wildlife is running the Baxter's Loch Ness Marathon on October 2nd 2011 and would love to make it an excuse to raise a bit of money towards ensuring the survival of the next British Wildlife Festival in March next year. I'm Being Good are pretty much one of my favourite bands, and are most probably one of the most influential bands from the late nineties and early 00's when it comes to the UK alternative scene, this now three piece join the likes Part Chimp, Kill Yourself, Charlottefield & Bilge Pump in what can only be one of most influence musical movements that I have personally had the privilege to witness first hand.

Here's quite a good review taken from Plan B in December 2008;

After drummer/guitarist and co-founder David Ewan Campbell’s departure, I’m Being Good are entering another chapter in their 15-year career. Not that anybody uninformed on such minutiae would feel much wiser on tonight’s evidence. Back gigging after a short spell dormant, IBG feel heavier than ever, yet all the while maintaining splintered subtleties that have made them one of Brighton’s most consistently notable DIY rock exports. On drums, Tom Barnes – clad in what a comrade dubs a “real forgotten-your-PE-kit” vest – hits skins hard enough to cause serious structural damage, clattering climaxes erupting around him. As comebacks go, it’s comfortably on the triumphant side of solid. (AA)

IBG are the rarest of things, a band from the UK that didn't disappear after one album, or didn't blow their early promise out of the water by signing to a big label, or basically didn't ever get shit.
This band has always been ON IT. Damn You! put them on time and again, their last trip to Nottingham being in 2007, and nothing's changed except this time it is a Gringo Records night and IBG have a new album, “Mountain Language” about to be released on your best loved Nottingham record label (yes, Gringo). For the uninitiated, IBG sound like this: It's the trick of bashing together the most far-out deconstructed, strange, marginal music with irresistible pop hooks and wonderful buzzsaw guitar attacks. It brings to mind the lovely times when Polvo, Unwound and their good buds Trumans Water ruled the indie-earth. Those bands bit the dust, IBG just got better. How Darwinian.

Foot Village (22.00)

Foot Village are tribal noise-rock band from Hollywood, California, consisting of four vocal drummers. They are involved with The Smell scene and collaborated for their 2009 album Anti-magic with a series of artists like AIDS Wolf, Jason Forrest, Kyle Mabson, Narwhalz, Tussle and Death Sentence: Panda!, Poingly, Radio Shock, and more. The album raised much attention via Pitchfork Media, Rough Trade, Vice magazine and Tiny Mix Tapes.

Based in Los Angeles, Foot Village are the quartet of Grace Lee, Brian Miller, Dan Rowan, and Josh Taylor. Active since 2007, and featuring members of Gang Wizard, Friends Forever, Rose For Bodhan, and the infamous International Voice of Reason, they've described themselves as the “loudest Acoustic Rock Band Ever”. Heavily concept-based, their foundation-myth depicts Foot Village being the first nation built after the foreseeable apocalypse, erecting civilization anew with drums and voices alone - no guitars, no electronics, no amplification (other than via megaphone). Key proponents of the Los Angeles DIY scene centred around The Smell, their brilliant live performances (with drums set up on the floor in the midst of the audience) are compelling spectacles of pure energy exchange. Their unplugged post-hardcore assault is anchored in the now of ecstatic energy, propelled by an inherent momentum and sudden dramatic shifts.

The band's debut album, 'Fuck The Future' was released on four separate labels in 2007, followed by the albums, 'Friendship Nation' (2008), 'Fuck The Future II' (2009) and 'Anti-Magic' (2009).

The band have been chosen by Portishead to perform at the ATP I'll Be Your Mirror festival that they will curate in July 2011 at London's Alexandra Palace.

Eagulls (21.00)

Eagulls Need no introduction, currently making big waves all over Leeds and the rest of the UK this five piece seem as though they could’ve hung around The Smell with No Age or that they take notes from the likes of dinosaur Jr. They have a better name than pretty much any other band around. The music is a cut above many of their supposed peers, too – a mixture of punk ethos and viscera lined with a kind of pop hopefulness.

Bitches (20.15)

Bitches are Stacey Owen and Blake Ivinson. She plays the drums and screams like nothing on earth and he plays bass guitar and screeches and sings intermittently (he also gives synopsis before each song, ranging from the King of England hunting small animals with swords to pigeons crossing the street.). They call their music ‘thug pop’, and I suppose that’s apt, as they sound like a pop song being well and truly beaten up. The word ‘fresh’ should probably only be used to describe fruit, but I will use it, just this once, about these guys. They sound new and fresh and fun. And a little angry, but aren’t we all?

T.O.Y.S (19.30)

T.O.Y.S are brand new out the box. Said box containing one Dave Kitchen (The Acutes) with voicebox and full keyboard action, Eddy Lines (Downdime) with wind up drum limbs and drums and Adam John Miller (Manhattan Love Suicides, Medusa Snare) with battery operated bass fuzz, batteries included.

from Glasgow Scotland. Starting out in 2005 as a visceral hardcore band, they have evolved over time into what is best described as “experimental progressive punk rock.” They have toured countless times around the U.K. and have released two albums: Take a Worm For a Walk Week (Midmarch Records) and The Monroe Transfer (Undergroove Records.) Take A Worm For A Walk Week have recently recorded their most ambitious album to date. Spanning influences from seventies prog rock to modern alternative music, TAWFAWW’s sound has metamorphosed from the relentless brutality of their first album to a much more experimental and innovative piece of work.

Thee Cuss Words are an homage to the sum of Charlie & Tom's influences; Arab on Radar, Coachwhips, Billy Childish… Started as a 2 piece in May 2010, toured the country and self released 2 eps by December 2010, became a trio briefly but now remain a duo which helps seeing as the band engineer their music to be low cost, easy to rock out to and fun to drink and dance to.

Despite being a band when they play live, Spectrals are still ostensibly the project of Louis Jones, with friends roped in to fill out the sound. The plus side of this is that now, instead of having one band to obsess and faun over, we have two – featuring at least one member of the backing band that have made that grunged out, surf sound one of aural highlights of the year, Bhurgeist are one to add to your list for messy, low-fidelity summer mixtapes.

The sound of Bhurgeist is one closely related to that of Spectrals, but in terms of a family tree, it’s more of a cousin than a brother – a dirtier, angrier cousin at that. Gone are the slow melodies and the knowing nods to swooning sixties pop and in is a grubby garage rock ethic. There’s little meandering on show here, with urgency and vigour favoured instead.

Thomas Truax (pronounced troo-aks) travels the world singing into a contraption he invented called 'The Hornicator'. Constructed on the shell of a junk gramophone horn it resembles something that might have been dreamt up by Dr. Seuss. He taps out live rhythm loops, plucks assorted strings, springs and attached noisemakers, building a backdrop of layered hypnotic sounds on top of which come some of the most striking stories about clones, butterflies, dogs, technology, loneliness, and other beautiful and sad things. Splendid magazine called him "one of the five or ten best singer/songwriters in the world that you've never heard of...an exceptional talent, unique and resistant to comparison, yet fairly accessible even to casual listeners."

His acclaimed full length albums 'Audio Addiction', 'Full Moon Over Wowtown' and 'Why Dogs Howl At The Moon' are available on Psycho Teddy/Real Time and SL records, as are a handful of singles and compilation tracks.

Born an illigitimate son of Screamin' Jay Hawkins, as a young man Thomas attempted to build a synthesizer out of an old radio. He put on magic shows and made stop-motion animated films with a Super 8 camera. He has done mandatory day-job time as an animator on MTV's Celebrity Deathmatch and Cartoon Network's Robot Chicken. Time travelling with the Toby Tyler Circus inspired him towards a career in show business. His acclaimed rock noir trio Like Wow toured and released several CDs, but Thomas grew frustrated with a seemingly endless line of drummers with strange misconceptions of rehearsal times. He finally decided to build his own motorized mechanical drummer and 'go solo'.

'Sister Spinster' is a variable speed, proudly pre-digital 'Flintstones-era drum machine' that features spoked wheels and percussive parts which can be readjusted between songs to create different rhythms. Newer instruments include The Stringaling, Mother Superior, and the Backbeater, a rhythm wheel made to be worn on the back, which Thomas promises will eventually also double as a mechanism for flight. He has no engineering background and while constructing these inventions has repeatedly subjected himself to inadvertent electrical shocks which he claims have stimulated his creativity and expanded his vocal range.

Wowtown is a surreal place from which some of the characters and events in Thomas's songs originate. He's been writing The Wowtown News, an email newsletter that he sends to a long list of faithful subscribers, for many years, and did a season of audio versions which broadcast weekly on London's Resonance FM station. Since 2006, Devin Booze and Sarah Reynolds have been actively recording and performing as EAR PWR, a project crafted around Booze’s instrumentation, Reynolds’ lyricism, and the two’s creatively synergetic interplay. Booze’s training at the Bob Moog founded music technology program at UNCA lays the sonic groundwork upon which EAR PWR is ultimately realized. Utilizing a collection of analog synthesizers and miscellaneous live percussion, the two explore and invent densely textured soundscapes. Following a short-lived stint in Baltimore, EAR PWR returned to the mountains of their native North Carolina to get to work on their sophomore record with a more grounded and earnest approach than was seen on their off-the-cuff and dance-heavy Carpark debut. Booze’s handwritten musical compositions--compiled while touring Europe and the US with friends Future Islands and labelmate Toro Y Moi--are overlaid with Reynolds’ naturalistic allusion and everyday sentimentality, blossoming into ten diverse tracks of tactile electronica, spattered percussion, thematic depth and lyrical melody that attest to the transformation enacted by these two over the last year and a half. Emerging from this sea change is a unique creation brimming with joy, contemplation, and an energetic spirit harnessed in Booze and Reynolds’ collaborative commitment to one another in their maturing musical endeavor. In May of 2011 EAR PWR will have the honor of performing at the ATP Festival in England curated by Animal Collective.

The Trumpets of Death are the trio of Karl De Silva, Benjamin and Laura Wetherill. This three piece play extremely eerie noise akin to Swans, Suicide or Wolf Eyes that reels in your ears and brings you into a droney trance, absolutely incredible musicianship played with an equal amount of vigour, confidence and sense of feeling, such a rare combination. Their debut album 'Teeth + Teeth = Teeths' came out earlier this year on Tin Angel

'Honestly, this is the kind of band I wish I could discover everyday in this job. A band completely fearless in the face of experimentation, who can switch with wild abandon and consummate ease from art rock noise to weeping piano pieces, and then hop on the groove train to kick around some processed beats, spindly guitars and sax shronks that are almost danceable but mostly just utterly, life-affirmingly weird.

At every twist and turn of their debut, Teeth + Teeth = Teeths (you have to admire their ruthless logic, if not their grammar), there's something new and strange waiting to greet you around the corner. And like the best 70s Krautrock or 60s psychedelia, it's often jarring and surprising while simultaneously making you think "Yes! Of Course!", like you've just stumbled upon something which truly speaks to you. It's there in the celebratory sax and unearthly moans which momentarily break free from the sea shanty sludge of 'The Paper Plough', and again in the gorgeous, fragile synth textures which open 'Woodrows Lament', and in a dozen other places too.

Over the course of five pieces, Trumpets of Death criss-cross their way through a number of influences and touchstones: the avant garde end of Radiohead meets Bowie's desolate Berlin instrumentals; the constantly shifting synth-scapes of Tangerine Dream suddenly crash against Faust at their most forbidding and industrial. At times they sound like Throbbing Gristle using a ouija board to summon the ghost of glam era Bryan Ferry performing 'In Every Dream Home a Heartache' in his best greasy showbiz croon; at others, they sound like 60s hippie-jazz oddities Gong after the acid has gone very bad indeed.' - 9/10 Rich Morris, Soundblab

Heart-Ships is a relatively new band from Leeds, made up of 7 passionate musicians and songwriters, they've been playing together for under a year and have just started gigging and recording. They'll remind you on Modest Mouse, Silver Mt Zion, Sunset Rubdown a bit, and possibly Interpol if they composed the soundtrack to Last of the Mohecans but I only say that to give you an idea about what a crazy music they play! You need to Listen to 'Heart of A Wrestler' it's sheer class!

Yearn is Karl Sveinsson, a lad from Manchester and member of Trio 'A Middle Sex', this is his new project, he's not on record yet so have a listen to his previous work.

Magnapinna are a Leeds trio who influences like Slint, Faraquet, Do Make Say Think and Shellac all shine through beautifully. Stoppy starty dare I say funky funky riffs and ingeniously crafted songs will leave you firmly gawping, a massively underrated band with great ideas.

"Band in The Modern World" is a feature documentary film about a foreign band visiting the US for the first time, only to discover that in social-network-hype-driven-America of today, no one really cares anymore about you, your band, or how hard you worked to get there."

The film follows an unknown garage trio who sets out on a two month road trip from New York to California and back. They encounter empty clubs, numerous promoter no shows, dead end small towns where the local scene has withered away, a surprising general feeling of apathy in the underground scene and a commercial world of excess that is always in the background.

"Band in the Modern World" is built like a montage of video confessionals, a sort of vlog-movie. It is a tour diary against all other tour diaries – A realistic, dark and lonely trip through the impersonal Indie world of today.

The Makers / Heroes of the film are Tel Aviv's TV Buddhas, who will be performing live after the screening. They play Indie Garage Rock akin Sic Alps and Thee Oh Sees, and most certainly influenced by the likes of Black Sabbath and Velvet Underground on both ends of the spectrum.

Support comes from Leeds based Post War Glamour Girls, four screaming charmers formed in late 2010. Heavy hitting and dry witted, they create songs which swell up and boil over into brooding, thumping masterpieces reminiscent of Tom Waits, Grinderman and ‘Moon and Antarctica-era’ Modest Mouse. Wearing their hearts firmly on their sleeves, PWGG live shows are a gripping affair. The sets are laced with reckless abundance as songs tinker into a clatter and clatter into a roar before collapsing in a proud heap on top of the audience. With their first single ‘Ode To Harry Dean’ due to drop after summer, Post War Glamour Girls are picking up pace fast and are most certainly one to watch.

Disasteradio is the pseudonym of Luke Rowell, a computer genius from Lower Hutt, New Zealand. He began writing a mixture of chiptune and synth-pop. He has since released eight albums, and toured Europe and the US with his unique blend of sublimely constructed electro pop for fans of Kraftwerk, John Maus, Dan Deacon, Dat Politics, Gay Against You, Printed Circuit, Max Tundra. His new video Gravy Rainbow is doing the rounds and picking up the hits on Youtube right now, and on a more personal note one of the most amazing acts and down to earth Earth humans I have ever met!

A Century of Trees takes the major triads and autotunes that you might find in a modern pop-stack and arranges them like a psychedelic puzzle-game whose finished article is a bit like viewing Jason Derulo through the fractured vision of the 16 eyed beast' - 20 Jazz Funk Greats

We are also blessed by two Leeds music legends in the form of Lo-fi pop battery powered trio Pifco and I'm also very excited that we have just confirmed D'Astro.

The Evening will be opened up with a huge bang by gang of four who love Gang of Four, Not Great Men.

John Maus lives in his birthplace of Austin, Minnesota. Whilst working towards his PhD in Political Science he also composes music that taps into melancholic fantasy and affirms that we are all truly alive. Questing synthesisers, tensely strung bass lines and chasing drum machines provide the perfect backdrop for John's deeply resonant reverb-drenched vocal.

Born in the decade of synth pop and sharing his birthday with George Frideric Handel, John started making music when Nirvana posters went up on every teenager's wall. It's this curious conflux of influences that partially helps to describe John's music. It's a world where the Germs jam with Jerry Goldsmith, Cabaret Voltaire relocate to Eternia and Josquin des Prez writes a new score for RoboCop. The confrontation of punk, the fleeting poignancy of 80s movie soundtracks, the insistent pulse of Moroder and the spirituality of Medieval and Baroque music all find salvation in John Maus.

After a spell working alongside Ariel Pink and Gary War in Haunted Graffiti, 2006 saw the release of John's debut album proper through Upset The Rhythm. His eagerly awaited new album 'We Must Become The Pitiless Censors of Ourselves' will be released in June later this year.

Plug are an articulate drums-and-also-bass duo from London who deal in heartily-voiced, compulsive melodies married to an incessant nodding groove. Comprising Sian Dorrer (vocals and drums) and Georgie Nettell (bass, keys and vocals) PLUG construct minimal pop vignettes with bright, sumptuous basslines locking indelibly with crisp, taught drumming - a deceptively simple yet driving combination owing as much to hip-hop and dance as the sparse clatter of post-punk.

Thomas Truax
Thomas Truax is a London-based American born troubadour, inventor and animator, whose origins lie in the New York antifolk scene. His gigs around the are legendary for the eccentricities of Truax's erratic "bandmates": homemade, noise-making machines with fabulous names and their own strange personalities and mythologies.

Mother Superior, Sister Spinster and the Cadillac Beatspinner are the drummers – made out of hub caps, motors, built-in microphones and mixers, with various mallets hitting drum skins, trumpet horns and cymbals as they rotate on a bicycle wheel. A portable rhythm machine comes in the form of the back-mounted Backbeater. The Stringaling is a bongo drum and a length of tumble dryer tubing that can be sang into or stretched, and is fitted with various pull-string gadgets from children's toys, a slide whistle and parts from music boxes. Perhaps the most famous, the Hornicator is a junk-shop gramophone horn, fitted with microphones, springs, guitar strings and kazoos, that acts both as a deep, reverby microphone and a sort of surreal, absurdist harp. "The Hornicator seemed like it really wanted to be born," says Thomas. "I just had to help it along."

"I had a lot of frustration trying to get people together for rehearsals, and when it came to tour planning on zero budget, it became a nightmare," says Truax. "At one point, I thought, 'Screw this – if I can't depend on anybody, I'll do it myself. I'll build my own drummer.' Mother Superior is like some of the drummers I've worked with: demanding and hungry. Still, we get along all right. She doesn't snore, or fart in the car."

Truax designs and builds the machines himself – some of which struggle to play any part the same way twice – giving his live shows and records a totally unique charm and a sound that is physically impossible to imitate. "I do feel that if something comes from you from the beginning, if you give birth to it with your own hands, then it can't help but be more true to your own personality than something someone else made. Like your own child, even if it's defective or stupid you're still going to love and care for it and try and help it succeed more than anyone else would, and I think that shows."

Hank Haint
He Lives in a Shack and makes music, Hank Haint is a one man band. Not a one man band who gets other musicians to back him up but one who does everything himself. E.g/ playing drums, guitar and singing at the same time. Kinda like a punk rock version of the buskers you used to see outside Woolworths and other now defunct highstreet stores. It’s lazy journalism I know to mention Bob Log III when talking about the music Hank Haint makes but it is similar in more ways than just the instrumentation. So then to sum up Hank Haint. = the dirty blues of Bob Log the IIIrd meets garage rock of Ty Segal.

Jingle jangle jingle jangle… Can you hear that? It’s the sound of the Indie Unicorn shaking it’s mane in your direction. Munch Munch ride on it’s muscular body, shouting and screaming in wondrous voices as they gallop across the musical landscape of 2011. Three lads and a lady from Bristol who are the missing link between Broken Social Scene and the power-pop stylings of early Weezer, you know, when they were good… It’s the charged rumbling chords of their synth’s, turned up to 11, combined with their rambling vocals that seem to suggest they’re having the biggest party in the world… and YOU’RE invited. Ace. Thomas, Richard, Jack and Sarah featured on the recent Worried Noodles compilation from David Shrigley, alongside the likes of Deerhoof, Islands and Hot Chip and their song ‘I See Sexy Dead People’ features on an OIB Split 7” with Gay Against You, The Tumbledown Estate and Lonely Ghosts; and they’re great. Did I say that already?

Hailing from Leeds (and Baildon), Mucky Sailor make a racket that feels maritime in it’s tribal delivery, regardless of the electronic, chaotic means that it gets there by. Rumour has it that they sometimes play in nautical gear. In short, it’s completely and utterly mad – a ramshackle coming together of ideas that is at once utterly baffling and undeniably brilliant. If Luther Van Dross, Flying Lotus and Lightning Bolt had ever been forced to sit through rainy Sunday afternoons in provincial England as a child, the result might come close to this. But making comparisons feels somewhat redundant when you’re faced with a band who think nothing of chopping and changing between an urgent, pulsating rhythm and samples of the tune from Rappers Delight.

Trapdoor Minotaur are a trio of experienced Leeds lady-rockers drawn from disparate previous incarnations. The sound of the whole is one of girl-group garage at it's best purveyed; confidently feminine with an occasionally dark, edge. It's unlikely, for example, that anyone else is going to sing a sentimental ditty about a neighbour's cat that sounds quite so pleadingly cacophonous. Spindly keyboards permeate throughout, perhaps heard to best effect during the spoken Gothic interlude of set-closer "Alan's Panics", not least in their combination with edgy guitar and choppy drums.

T.O.Y.S by T.O.Y.S

T.O.Y.S (not sure what it stands for?) are a brand new group of males who you may have seen in their other pop groups including Downdime, The Acutes and The Medusa Snare. This will be their first gig ever and considering you can listen to their little crunk pop masterpieces on soundcloud you might be singing along with them in a few weeks from now.

It's been a wee while since British Wildlife put on Cissy, shame on British Wildlife! Cissy are a local group of very gifted individuals who play impossible not to dance to funk krunk afro beat rhythms, clangy guitars, groovy organs that warm your organs and sexy bass pows. To add to the mix is France's LOUP duo consisting of multi instrumentalists Clement Edouard (Irene, Lunatic Toys, AM-PM) on sax and electronics and Sheik Anorak (SoCRaTeS, Neige Morte, Kandinsky). Little Parades are Leeds' answer to Sigur Ros, A huge claim yes, but these chaps do everything right with their perfectly executed waves of etheral music. Gig starts at 8.00 so please come on down, brave the weather whatever we have to put up with i'l make sure the George is nice and cosy down there!

PAPAYE is a 3-piece outfit full of vitamins and tender flesh. Their music is like

sitting on a high-speed train with needles for cushion, perfectly uncomfortable.

Even though the band members also take part in Pneu, Room204 and

Kommandant Cobra, according to the Africantape label manager it's the best

thing they've done, then again, he also said he didn't want to be a dick about

it. I personally hate side projects; it's like a bunch of bastard kids that all look

the same. But I love PAPAYE. Why? Because, it's like juicy pop with sour edge

to it, the only fruit you can't put in a smoothie with out ruining all the other ones.

Their references are probably somewhere in between sweet Deerhoof

melodies, early Don Caballero time signatures and US Maple for the "what the

hell are they doing? Oh right I get it" parts. The band is concise and powerful,

with no other intent than pure excitement.

The last 2 years has seen SF recruit a new drummer, release a split 7" (with Shield Your Eyes) and a full length (Dead Lake), start a record label (Triplejump) and tour Europe and the UK extensively - playing the Camden Crawl and Moorfest as well as shows with the likes of The Hope Conspiracy, Black Elk, Pneu, Hey Colossus, Bilge Pump and That Fucking Tank.

The immediate future promises a split ep with Oxford's Ivy's Itch (on Blindsight) and an anthology of out of print material on cassette (on Zak WeHeartRecords' new imprint).

TV Buddhas are punk in a way that is mostly overlooked by contemporary culture. They bring their own baggage and anxieties to the table, chop everything into pieces, and serve it up in the most basic way possible, baring their voices and their hearts. Consisting of brother and sister Uri and Mickey Triest, and Mickey's husband Juval Haring, TV Buddhas has been playing 200 shows a year since they relocated from their home of Tel Aviv, Israel to Berlin, Germany in 2007.

On constant tour, the band's everyday life got lost and their privacy was invaded by the "cool" people they had avoided contact with throughout their teen years. Not having any kind of domestic existence or place to call sanctuary, TV Buddhas turned to their music and put their frustration into words. They wrote about being too tired to face a show, too tired to go out during the very few times they were home, feeling awkward walking down the street in hip neighborhoods, not feeling at home or fitting anywhere besides their own heads, and feeling completely out of their element around other rock n' roll types.

The result of this was a unique punk rock trio, honest, primal and full of feelings of impatience and alienation. TVB echoes the kind of discontentment typical of bands like The Wipers and a straightforward quality reminiscent of The Modern Lovers.

That said TV Buddhas are fucking cool! They shit all over your generic garage rock band with strung out tunes and heavy hitting riffs. They are ace, all the support bands are ace, there really is no excuse! So come down to the George, which may I add has had a wonderful makeover and I am particularly excited about using it as a promoter for the first time!

British Wildlife Presents a night of cosmic experimental noise-rock that you can dance to (if that way inclined). Gum Takes Tooth are a duo from London, England. Sick of being mugged and under appreciated, they have decided to travel to the north of England where everything is much more better. If you like noisy thrashy bands like Lightning Bolt and Wolf Eyes you should probably come to this one before these chaps get well big, they even graced Glastonbury this year! The supports are great too if I do say so myself; Ultra-Humantiarian are a new project made up of that naked drummer guy from Hunting Lodge and the moog man from Monster Killed by Laser playing improvised kraut-rock in the vein of John Carpenter. Last but not least Two Minute Noodles, the organ and drum bashing duo are a Leeds institution and a reason to get down early! If you are still not convinced you can listen to them here...

MFU has been electrifying audiences for ten years with far out propulsive Space Rock, playing all over Europe and the UK, including the Tate Modern and recently the No No Logic Festival in Barcelona. MFU has played and recorded with Faust, Damo Suzuki, and Add N to X. Having released the CD album 'AMAZING SCIENCE FRICTION' on his own label Outer-Music and appearing in the film 'One Man in the Band' Alongside the likes of Dennis Hopper Choppers, Thomas Traux and Duracell, MFU now concentrates on making surreal films and music videos. Support comes from the mighty Leeds faithfuls Mucky Sailor and Cowtown. Plus a DJ set from Mr British Wildlife, expect to hear Cameo, Beastie Boys, Yes, Genesis, Bilge Pump, Sisqo and Warren G, it's going to be immense!
